Biomimetics for Applications in 3D Printed Greenhouses

Biomimetics for Applications in
3D Printed Greenhouses

Capstone Thesis Project

Overview

This thesis explores biomimicry — drawing inspiration from nature to optimize structural design — to enhance greenhouse resistance to wind and gravitational loads.

The aim of this investigation is to research a variety of naturally occurring biological structures for the application of farming.

Approach

The design is inspired by honeycombs, which are integrated into the exterior of a geodesic dome greenhouse.

The study focuses on the structural aspects of greenhouses, using finite element analysis to evaluate effectiveness. Additionally, a 3D-printed scale model is created for potential physical testing.

Identical material to the large-scale application was produced for purposes of force testing, visualization, and other relevant physical analysis.
